[Star in News reporter Lee Sang-baeg] BTS has been selected by CNN as one of the top 10 artists who changed music in the 2010s.

CNN on Thursday announced the top 10 artists who have reinvented themselves and created their own music genres and made an impressive impact on the music industry.

BTS was named along with Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Lady Gaga, Drake, Metro Bumin, Taylor Swift, Solange and Kanye West.

CNN said that it popularized K-pop in the United States.

"BTS has led K-pop to mainstream music in the U.S., and since this phenomenon took place only in the late 2010s, K-pop will be able to expand its base further in the upcoming 2020s," he said.

"What's surprising is that BTS became the first K-pop album to top the U.S. Billboard 200 chart in 2018 with 'Love Yourself' and has topped the Billboard 200 chart three times in a year," he said. "It has sold millions of albums worldwide, including the U.S."

Looking back on the fact that the Wonder Girls performed on the Billboard chart with "Nobody" in 2009 and Psy’s "Gangnam Style" in 2012, CNN said, "K-pop has always enjoyed great popularity in Asia, but it has struggled to penetrate the U.S. market," and then said that BTS has overwhelmingly outstripped everyone."

Meanwhile, BTS performed on ABC's New Year's Rocking Eve 2020 at Times Square in New York on the night, showing off K-pop's prowess.

Ryan Seacrest, the broadcaster that hosted the event, introduced it as "a group that has possessed the entire planet," while BTS performed two hit songs for eight minutes, drawing huge cheers along with "Korean language hacks."
